Yet they were Able to make it in the story (wild policy arc) so, its was Sato, who left his dad's car to the police, that made rei see it and took interest in it and later on buy the same car. But nevertheless, they were able to match it with Ray's gundam: The RX-78-2

You probably can't fully enjoy this show if you haven't watched or read Detective Conan, as Amuro is a pretty plot-relevant character in the main storyline and you'd need to know his backstory and such.
